CLIENT PROFILE
A professional couple based in a large rural house in Bedfordshire with multiple outbuildings.
CLIENT BRIEF
- Transform a tired space above a garage into a entertaining space.
- Design a space that would accommodate a bar, dancing, pool table area and shower room.
- Integrate smart technology and lighting design as part of the wow factor.
- Design bespoke cabinetry, storage and seating to fit the awkward space.
- Consider how to make the space work around the existing structural columns, beams and vaulted ceiling.
- Source furniture, fixtures, fittings, accessories & decorative lighting.
- Project manage thirteen trades and oversee delivery of the project to completion.
DESIGN PROCESS
This project did not come to us in the traditional way, the clients had decided to take the project on themselves, pulling together the various experts and having them design their particular area.
The problem was that there was no big picture design concept to work to. The client was also trying to run a business whilst managing this project which quickly became overwhelming.
We were recommended as designers to glue the project together and provide something ‘extra’ but we had to produce a design to wow the client on very limited time. The clients had suggested ‘red’ as a theme which we liked but thought would be too overpowering for the whole space.
We thought this space should tell a story and we hung the concept on this tale. As you moved through the space you’d be taken from innocence to hedonism. Starting with the white/gold of the shower room, moving through the black/gold of the dance floor and pool table area and past the dramatic curtain into the immersive red of the bar area.
The construction of the space was very complicated with cross beams and columns dividing it. There was not a single matching or corresponding height or measurement. We designed the space, cabinetry and lighting elements so that we could hide, ignore or accentuate these quirks to our advantage. We created a bespoke column and light design to transform four columns into lamps making a feature of the structural elements we couldn’t remove.
We positioned lights at differing heights to trick the eye so that the rooms ‘looked’ square and equal.
We came to the project with some big ideas but work had already started and we had to get to grips with the thirteen trades instructed by the client. We had to work quickly to pull them together into one client team and produce a schedule that considered every trade and their needs.
The challenge was akin to picking up a broken jigsaw and trying to put all the pieces back
together in the right order while keeping the project moving forward. The results speak for themselves but this was one of our most challenging projects.
