brand story

Emma believes in the power of great design and how it change lives. The feeling of living or working  in a beautiful space that meets all your needs will set you up for success, everyday. It has such a strong influence on self esteem and confidence and Emma wants everyone to share that.

Emma’s career in design started at the BBC with CBeebies and CBBC as a prop maker and set designer. The BBC furnished Emma with a wealth of skills which she carried through to her future in Interior Design.

Alongside being a mum of three girls Emma retrained and launched her own Interior Design business in 2014. Emma quickly gained a reputation  for her unique approach to interiors.

In 2017 Emma landed a dream job as the new on-screen designer for CBBC ‘s ‘The Dengineers’ where her experience in TV and design talent combine. The series came to and end in 2022 by which time Emma had appeared four series and designed ten one-of-a-kind dens. A den designer with a unique sense of style that  proved a massive hit with fans of the show. Emma won a BAFTA and a Royal Television award for den’s she designed on the show.

Emma launched OWN IT home in 2021 as the next chapter in Emma’s adventure with design – where her passion for creating truly unique interiors became a reality. Emma’s personal mission is to empower people to be themselves without apology. OWN IT home is an extension of this, bringing this unapologetic self into home decor.

Emma continued to grow her business taking on many residential and commercial clients alongside work on OWN IT and The Dengineers.

In 2023 Emma became a columnist for St Albans Times, discussing all things interiors each week.

Emma lives in St Albans UK with her wonderful husband, three fierce daughters and one Cocker spaniel.

Interior design has been a passion of mine as long as I can remember, I had subscriptions to Home Magazines long before I owned a home, as a child I would delight in rearranging my bedroom and making things look better.

After having my first daughter my career working for Children’s BBC came to a natural end as the department relocated to Salford. I  decided to turn my passion for Interiors into a business. I retrained and quickly began taking on ambitious professional projects around pregnancy and a growing family. Pushing myself to transform an upscale student pad in Paddington and two holidays homes in West Wales, 10 and 6 bed respectively. This determination catapulted my portfolio and experience over a few short years.

I quickly realised that I had created my own niche with my distinctive style and this was gaining momentum locally. My designs were memorable and people had started to notice.

In the snatched hours between raising three girls and running a home I persisted.

I had to do everything myself, learning along the way, building my social media, websites and teaching myself systems and programmes like CAD, the hustle had to be all mine.

6 weeks after having my third daughter I accepted a job to appear onscreen for Children’s BBC in The Dengineers, a dream opportunity to create themed dens. It was like a pat on the back for the new career I had created from the people I used to work alongside. They believed in me and I spent 5 years creating dream dens for kids all across the UK. A role that allowed me to be authentic whilst having the most fun.

It was this work on Den’s that developed my need to celebrate uniqueness. The kids were unapologetic about their niche interests and I wanted to develop something that would allow the under represented to see themselves reflected in their homes. I launched OWN IT home to fill this gap in the market.

I am proud to say I know who I am and what I like.

I want to empower the people around me to do the same. I believe that homes should reflect the stories of the people who live there not just be like something you see in a magazine. It’s easy to copy, that’s not real  Interior Design for me.  I care that my clients feel seen and that their spaces bring them joy that’s authentic to them, and nobody else.

Emma was an absolute delight from the first consultation, she totally got my style.

We communicated through out the project and she met all deadlines discussed. Her service provided a detailed design board so I could visualise the colours and design of room. She is extremely creative and has a great eye for what works in a home. Her suggestions through out the project encouraged my creative side to flow too! As a result we have a stunning bedroom to enjoy and never want to leave!
