CLIENT BRIEF
The building was a large open space that has been everything from a cat café to a chinese buffet, it had been laying vacant and disused as a commercial premises.
- Create an ‘Instagram worthy’ nightclub with dance floor, main bar, DJ booth, cocktail bar, VIP area and reception.
- Design a floor plan that made the space ‘feel’ busy even as it was filling up.
- Create a lighting scheme that offered different schemes for all zones.
- Design a bespoke pattern that could be repeated around the club and create a brand ‘look’.
- Create a scheme sympathetic to the art deco listed parts of the space.
DESIGN PROCESS
The building itself has a listed status for its historical significance as an art deco cinema, so had elements that were to remain untouched. Any design had to seamlessly integrate the old with the new.
We created distinct zones, dividing up the open floor space. We wanted to create smaller areas that would fill up with people first and make the space ‘look’ busy from the street. We wanted to avoid that feeling of walking into an empty club. We achieved this by creating a cocktail bar at the front with seating and then beyond that a main bar and dance floor that people could move into later.
We chose a vibrant palette and set it against black using a neon pink accent which continued into the lighting design. We highlighted the architectural features such as the internal columns and incorporated these into the fun scheme, turning one of them into a palm tree.
We designed each area to have unique ‘Instagrammable’ features keeping a common brand story to make it cohesive. The design of a bespoke tropical pattern with art deco shapes was rolled out onto wallpaper, flooring, fabric cinema seats and accessories. This design contained a hidden pair of hairdressing scissors as a nod to the nightclub owners also running a chain of hair salons.
